Why I teach About Cinco de Mayo in My Spanish Class

  1. Thank you for all your reference!! One tradition I use in my class is where my kiddos act out the Battle of Puebla by dividing my class in half, Mexico & French soldiers (of course more French than Mexicans). Students love this as they get to throw at each other paper balls re-enacting the battle. It's lots of fun!

    Just a little comment, El cinco de mayo is celebrated in Mexico nationwide. It is a holiday, schools are closed and so are most of business. There are several parades celebrating the date, being the most important one in downtown Mexico City where the President usually is present watching the parade from the balcony of the National Palace. All the army and police departments are part of this 5 de mayo parade. Thanks for helping dissipate the confusion over this Mexican Holiday.
